About this item

Lina Bo Bardi was a prolific modernist architect, designer, illustrator, writer, editor and curator — first in Rome and Milan, and then in São Paulo, Salvador and Rio de Janeiro. Leaving behind an Italy marred by war, she arrived in Brazil to a new world rich in opportunity to pursue her emancipatory vision of modernism. Which was based less on formalist principles and more on the power of design to nurture collective life.
The beauty of the Pé de Ferro’s design, co-designed with Giancarlo Palanti, lies in its simplicity; an organically shaped tubular metal structure outlines two angular Brazilian rosewood frames. The chair was featured in Arci Chen’s ‘Brazil Modern’ book, 2016, and in a 2015 retrospective at R & Company Gallery in New York on the work of Lina Bo Bardi and Roberto Burle Marx.
Our pair was acquired from a private collection in Brazil and in their original state. The wood has had some restoration, and the cushions have been beautifully reupholstered in Pierre Frey linen.
