About this item

Early 19th century Empire-period monumental slight bed crafted from molded mahogany, mahogany veneer and gilt bronze. Sleigh bed is defined as a style of bed with curved or scrolled headboards and footboards thus resembling a sled or sleigh. The Empire sleigh bed was created in France during the Directoire period (1795-1799) and became popular during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte and the Restauration period. They were scrolled pieces, which were usually fitted with finelt chiseled ormolu decoration. Our bed is topped by a round bed crown in mahogany veneer, decorated with gilt bronze flowers and mask. It supports the majestic beige curtains. Tailored mattress and bed base. The bedspread is made out of the same fabric as the curtains.
The bed displays a detailed ormolu decoration featuring the sleep: the sleeping mask that adorns the bed crown, and the symbols of Psyche who, according to Greek mythology, visited Cupid only at night. Psyche is symbolized by the winged masks crowned with stars, that decorate the two columns of the bed, as well as the butterflies that pull Cupid’s carriage on clouds. The tale of Cupid and Psyche was particularly appreciated during the Neoclassical period. The columns are also decorated with a frieze of water-leaf and a Corinthian capital chiseled with palmette and foliage.
