There are lots of accessories that can provide a glorious accent to home decor, injecting a dash of personality and colour into the style of the room. One of the rarer types of accessory is vintage lighters. A practical item that can be used not only for a cigarette or pipe but also for your candles and fireplace, vintage lighters clearly have a function. But the reasons for choosing vintage extend far beyond the simple task of creating fire. Vintage lighters are whimsical, fun and colourful, providing an almost playful feel to your overall look. At Vinterior we’ve got some great vintage lighters which are certain to brighten up your home. Check out our collection along with the rest of our vintage furniture and decor in our online catalogue today.
The attraction of vintage lightersVery few lighters can be found pre-1920s but even those which aren’t quite as old are much in demand, especially if they’re highly decorative or unusual. The very first lighters were made in 1823 but were highly combustible and dangerous; it wasn’t until the next century that flint-based lighters were created.
Unlike today where lighters are deliberately small and unobtrusive, in the early 20th century and even post-World War II, some designs were made as much for decoration as for use. Table lighters were considered items of real beauty and companies competed to create the most striking and attractive designs. Some of the companies who made these vintage lighters included Dunhill, ST Dupont, Bentley and Rowenta, but without doubt the biggest names were Ronson and Zippo.
Using vintage lighters in your home decorIf you are not a smoker the chances are you’ve never considered buying a lighter but these vintage designs are more about decoration than practical function. Some of the decoration is simply spectacular and they make a great addition to any retro decor. There’s a wide range of styles available, from the industrial to the ornate and decorative. This means that no matter what your home decor is, you can use table lighters to great effect.
The 1950s collection of Aquarium lighters from Dunhill are a real collector’s treat, each being meticulously handmade and one of a kind. Featuring a 3D decoration of fish, water and the background, each of these lighters is a show-stopping centrepiece that would look stunning on a dresser, table or sideboard.
Ronson lighters from the 1960s were less ornate but equally striking, with swirls and patterns which contrast with a coloured background.
ST Dupont opted for a different style, with lighters that were opulent in design, but relatively simple. Their popular Model 2 was coloured gold with a diamond textured surface, creating a table lighter that co-ordinates well with gilded mirrors and lighting.
