What is marquetry?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Marquetry is a decorative craft used to create patterns, pictures, and designs for furniture and other structures. Although not exclusively reserved for woodwork, marquetry often refers to the art of applying cut pieces of wood veneer to doors, tabletops, drawer fronts, and other furniture parts.<\/span><\/p>\n

How old is the marquetry technique?<\/b><\/h2>\n

The oldest example of original marquetry has been found on an Egyptian sarcophagus that\u2019s over 4000 years old. Early marquetry was often crafted with stones and gemstones and it wasn\u2019t until the 16th century that wood veneer was used for marquetry designs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Favoured by Florentine and Neapolitan furniture makers, wooden marquetry was popular during the Italian Renaissance and drew inspiration from ancient Roman and Greek classicism.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Modern techniques of wood marquetry were developed in Antwerp, Belgium, but it wasn\u2019t until this decorative art caught the eye of French King Louis XIV that it captured the imagination of furniture makers worldwide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Used extensively throughout Versailles and other royal residences, French marquetry masters such as <\/span>Pierre Gole<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Andr\u00e9 Charles Boulle<\/span><\/a> looked to 12th-century Islamic art for inspiration. Popularising the arabesque style with gilt bronze and pewter accents in their designs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While in Georgian Britain, marquetry designs were initially inspired by Chinese-style patterns and later furniture makers such as <\/span>Thomas Chippendale<\/span><\/a> revived the art form with neoclassic designs.<\/span><\/p>\n

More recent revivals of marquetry came during the art deco period of the early 20th century. Cabinetmakers of the time echoed the era\u2019s popular geometric patterns, decorating everything from grand <\/span>armoires<\/span><\/a> to humble <\/span>cocktail cabinets<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

How is marquetry created?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Cabinetmakers and artists often plan their marquetry designs to scale first. Then, once they\u2019ve selected which veneers to use, they cut each piece to their prescribed shape. These pieces are then fitted into the marquetry pattern and glued into place.<\/span><\/p>\n

Due to its precise nature, mastering marquetry can take years. Learning how different materials and woods behave when cut, which tones work together and designing unique patterns requires skill, discipline, and passion.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is the difference between inlay and marquetry?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Often used interchangeably, the terms marquetry and inlay refer to two distinct types of woodwork.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Marquetry is created using carved pieces of wood that are then assembled to create a decorative panel of veneer. While inlay is created by inserting carved pieces into recesses cut into a larger sheet of wood. <\/span><\/p>\n

Is marquetry still produced today?<\/b><\/h2>\n

Modern marquetry is typically produced by specialist craftspeople. Cabinets, dressers, and tables crafted with marquetry today are generally bespoke pieces, with price tags that represent the skill and discipline needed to master wooden marquetry.<\/span><\/p>\n
