Publishers are capitalising on our newfound love for the word with stocking filled sized books on \u2018how to hygge\u2019 and retailers are rebranding garments from cashmere socks, candles and loose teas as the ultimate \u2018hygge\u2019 accessory.<\/p>\n<p>Yet what exactly does the Nordic word \u2018hygge\u2019 mean and how does it apply to the home? Many people are not <em>quite<\/em> sure what it means, so to help we have selected five pointers to help in your education of hygge;<\/p>\n<p>1)\u00a0Firstly, hygge isn\u2019t all about cashmere. Nor is it about loose tea, an abundance of candles or warm socks. Hygge can\u2019t be distilled into a single item or accessory. Hygge is too big and too transient to be defined by a single \u2018thing.\u2019 However those items can help contribute to creating a Hygge feeling.<\/p>\n<p>2) Hygge isn\u2019t literally translatable, yet did you know that the word \u2018hug\u2019 is derived from Hygge. Not cozy. Hug, the way you feel wrapped up in that moment of heartfelt closeness \u2013 that\u2019s hygge.<\/p>\n<p>3) It is difficult to capture the true feeling of Hygge into an instagram upload. You can\u2019t really snap a \u2018hygge\u2019 moment since we would argue that it\u2019s only on reflection or in the present second that you realise you\u2019re even having a hyggelig moment.<\/p>\n<p>4) Being alone, being present, that\u2019s altogether a different meaning. We would argue that hygge has to involve others since it\u2019s truly about connection &#8211; we\u2019re social creatures, after all.<\/p>\n<p>5) Hygge\u2019s association with cinnamon buns, slices of cake and coffee is slightly confusing, though we are all for an appreciation of a baked good. Food is a fundamental way to bring people together so 99% of the time it does feature alongside hygge but it\u2019s not so much about the actual food; it\u2019s about the feeling behind the food.<\/p>\n<p>So, how exactly does &#8216;hygge&#8217; apply to the home? Having a healthy, happy home environment with furniture, art and objects you really love will lay the foundation for a space that feels intrinsically homely and \u2018hygge\u2019. Think about texture and natural fabrics in your home space that will bring the elements of nature inside. Robust leather chairs and rattan benches, combined with sheepskin throws and wool rugs are tactile pieces that &#8216;ground&#8217; the feeling of a room because of their natural states.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1216\" src=\"https:\/\/vinterioruk.wpcomstaging.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/winter-interiors-the-lifestyle-edit-1-620x413-1.jpg\" alt=\"winter-interiors-the-lifestyle-edit-1-620x413-1\" width=\"620\" height=\"413\" \/><\/p>\n\n<p>Forget trends, as Danes are notoriously design-savvy, choosing to invest in collectors\u2019 classics that will live alongside their changing lives. It\u2019s why every home in Denmark looks effortlessly stylish, even if it\u2019s a small city apartment with a limited budget. Nothing looks too \u2018done\u2019 as the authentic designs and emphasis on good quality pieces appear to look timeless. Most Danes inherit classic pieces within their families so it&#8217;s not unusual to find original <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vinterior.co\/furniture\/seating\/dining-chairs\/hans-wegner-wishbone-chair-by-carl-hansen-4-oak-available\">Hans Wegner wishbone chairs<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vinterior.co\/lighting\/ceiling-lights\/pendants\/ph-charlottenborg-5-4-poul-henningsen-for-louis-poulsen\">Paul Henningsen lamps<\/a> in most homes.<\/p>\n\n<p>Lighting can dramatically change the feeling within a room and Danes invest a lot of time and effort in creating the right lighting atmosphere inside. Think reading lamps in small corners and floor lamps behind larger pieces of furniture. Ceiling pendants add pools of light above dining tables which adds a warming effect.<\/p>\n\n<p>Taking pride in your home will translate into a good feeling overall \u2013 which, some would argue, really is the definition of &#8216;hygge&#8217;. It\u2019s about feeling comfortable with where you\u2019re at, having your friends over for dinner, sharing a \u00a0bottle of wine, laughing, chatting and feeling present.
