About this item

Wooden carving of protective figure from Sumba Island, Indonesia (circa Mid-20th Century). This wooden figure is carved by hand and originates from Sumba in the Eastern Indonesian island chain. It is made in a human form to honour the Marapu (ancestral spirits), part of the animistic / ancestral religion in the region. The human figure invites the Marapu to move inside the statue, believed to protect one's home and to guide one through life. The Marapu are believed to be the occupants of the eternal heaven, living in couples and leading a similar existence to humans. In fair vintage condition commensurate with age. There is a cavity at the top of the head where formerly a wooden piece projected. It has been priced accordingly.
