About this item

Delicate abstract ceramic sculpture representing a regal figure made by Judith de Karolyi. Maker's label on the base.
Although lesser known for her own ceramic work, Judith de Karolyi was a key figure in the lives of many artists in the late 20th century as she took over the reigns of the Karolyi Foundation after the death of her mother, la Comtesse Michael Karolyi who founded it in 1959 in honour of her husband, Hungarian politician Michael Karolyi. The Foundation was housed in a large country estate in the South of France. It offered accommodation and a collective workshop for more than 500 artists over its decades long history. It was a place where residents could give free rein to their imagination. It closed its doors in 1991. Some years before that, Judith Karolyi moved to Tourrettes-sur-Loup where she opened her own ceramic studio and shop. She worked here till 1995. This piece dates from that period.
