About this item

Born Edinburgh, 11 Feb; died Lamlash, Arran 9 May. Painter in oil and watercolour; landscape and flowers. Studied at Haldane Academy, Glasgow, then at Glasgow School of Art. Brother of Kellock B(qv). Subsequently worked as a textile designer and studied at Heatherley's in London. Almost all his works were Scottish scenes, the only important exception being the 'Temple of Com-oriba, Egypt', exhibited in 1879. In common with a number of his contemporaries such as Waller Hugh Paton(qv), he loved the landscape of Arran, where he died. Co-founder of the Scottish Artist's Benevolent Association(qv), becoming its president until 1922. Associated with Glasgow for most of his life, for many years President of the Glasgow Art Club(qv). Writing in The Studio Pinnington said 'he works largely in semitones in russets, grey, green and soft shades of blue. A leaning towards low tones is accompanied by a frequent choice of evening, moonlight and winter effects. He loves to look dreamily across moorland when the sun is low, when the clouds absorb the dying light and the world reposes in shadow'. Caw found his landscapes 'delightful in their truth, delicacy and simplicity'. Active in the development of the watercolour technique using broad washes, sometimes called 'wet', that was common especially among Glasgow painters of the time, in which the influences of James Docharty(qv) and the Hague School were apparent. Elected RI 1878, RSW 1878, ARSA 1892, RSA 1908. Exhibited RA(31), RSA(121), RSW(125), RI(20), GI(115), RBA(6) & L(54). Represented in Glasgow AG, Paisley AG.
