About this item

Antique Oil on Canvas Painting

The more I look at this painting the more I love it. A hard thing to say for sure but it is probably my favourite painting in the shop at the moment.

I love how the choppy sea has been captured by the artist and the waves are breaking over the central boat.

It is signed and dated '1880'. I can't quite make out the signature properly but looks to be 'C. Singin'.

Quite a poignant running theme of seascapes from the 19th century seem to compare more traditional vessels with steam powered ones, and in this case the small traditional sail powered ship is struggling quite a bit in the choppy waves in comparison to the steam ship in the background chugging along quite contently. A symbolic statement or just a sign of the times?

Either way this painting is a beautiful example, touching on the impressionistic, completed by quite a competent hand. It would grace any wall space in any interior either traditional or more eclectic.

It is framed in a beautiful and complimentary chunky, yet elegant gilt and limed wooden frame.

Overall measurements: 79cm X 60cm X 7cm.
Obverall the painting is in good vintage condition. It could be cleaned if you like that sort of thing and there are some minor areas of wear that have been touched up at some point but looking at the piece as a whole it does sing as it is. Please see photographs.
