Design for Morley College, Southwark (1935)
Signed and dated 1935 Edward Maufe, Architect.

Pencil and watercolour

33cm x 53cm (12.9×20.8 inches)

Design for the new South Court, Morley College, SE1. Opened in 1889, Morley College was to provide inexpensive entertainment to the local working population. In 1937 Maufe designed an extension to the original Victorian Building. The original building was bombed during the war, but Maufe’s extension survived. The replacement building was decorated with spectacular murals by John Piper, Edward Bawden and Martin Froy. Gustav Holst and Michael Tippett are former music directors of the College. The building can be seen here.

Provenance: The estate of Bernard Bumpus.
