About this item

Reginald Hallward

Ilford Memorial Monument

Pencil drawing

Ilford raised £20,000 to commemorate the Great War. Discussions revolved around the creation of a memorial children’s hospital, but in the end, the town was worried about the costs of upkeep for the hospital so built a garden and monument instead – though they did build a wing on the local hospital. This drawing is a proposed sketch; the final monument – whilst retaining the Celtic cross – is simpler but incorporates a fine monument of a soldier presenting arms by the sculptor Newberry Abbott Trent (1885-1953) – who is best known for the reliefs on 3 St James’s Square, London, depicting London street scenes, and those on the entrance doors to The Adelphi Building on The Strand which depict industrial scenes.

Here Hallward’s portrayal of the sky has a radiant quality, suggesting the hope and new birth following the War, perhaps drawing from images for the transfiguration of Christ.
