A copy of this painting is currently in the museum of Tournai (Belgium) at the Ghent Museum "on the back of the montage
Provenance: Artist's family
As indicated on the back of the mount, this drawing is a preparatory study for the portrait of Madame Rycke, the artist's mother-in-law, preserved at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels, it is interesting to compare the final version of this semi-intimate portrait semi-official with our drawing. Of course, there is more freedom and spontaneity in the drawing.

Louis Gallait is a Belgian artist born in Tournai in 1810. A student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Tournai, he completed his training in Antwerp. In 1833, he exhibited in Brussels "The Christ Healing the Blind", table very appreciated by the public and bought by public subscription to the cathedral of Tournai. The following year, he went to Paris and worked in Paul Delaroche's studio. Back in Belgium, Gallait created a history school painting in a romantic style. Highly esteemed in France, he received several commissions for historical paintings for the Museum of the History of France, created by Louis-Philippe in a wing of the Palace of Versailles. He also had many commissioned portraits, drawn or painted. He realized the portrait of Georges Sand and Frédérique Chopin, met in Paris.
