1st edition 1958 linocut, signed

A large original linocut by Edward Bawden. Signed in pencil and inscribed "Brighton Pier, Artist's Proof, 38/40" in the margin, this first edition linocut is a fabulous depiction of Brighton's famous pier.

At 145cm x 53cm this is one of Bawden's largest prints. It is illustrated and documented in the catalogue raisonné "Edward Bawden: Editioned Prints" by Jeremy Greenwood.

Edward Bawden was the acknowledged master of linocut printing. Elected RA in 1963 his woodcuts, poster designs, watercolours and linocuts made him a highly important figure in British art.

This early linocut is in good vintage condition. With minor wear at the margins, laid down on board, the paper with some yellowing due to age, it is nonetheless a bold and beautiful image. It has been recently reframed and glazed.
