About this item

Djerba', oil on board (1973), by Wilhelm Goliasch (1922 - 1986). A Berber with a shepherd's crook passes by a simple building typical of the island. The sandy stone colour of the structure and its palms point the viewer to the stunning sky-blue backdrop. A splendid work of art which conjures up a time long gone by. In excellent vintage condition. Framed and signed by the artist in the lower left hand corner.

Legend has it that Djerba was the island of the lotus-eaters where Odysseus was stranded on his voyage through the Mediterranean. Tradition of the Djerba Jewish minority tells that in the year 586 BCE, some of the Israelite temple priests who were able to escape the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple there, settled in Djerba. This painting captures the essence of Djerba in a few beautiful strokes of Goliasch's brush.

About the Artist: Wilhelm Goliasch (1922 - 1986) Swiss/French painter of still lives, portraits and landscapes. Influenced by the school of Paris painters such as Claude Venard and Bernard Buffet.
